Regularly eating high-calorie, high-sugar, and high-sodium meals at these restaurants can have devastating long-term health impacts, such as obesity, heart disease, and more. In an effort to combat these worsening trends, some of the largest fast-food restaurant chains pledged to offer healthier meal options on their kids’ menus. Legendary Latino TV Personality Pushes for Diabetes Awareness

For over 50 years, Don Francisco has been delighting Latino audiences on TV as the legendary host of Sabado Gigante and Don Francisco Presenta. Now, he is using his influence to help launch a new campaign to help dispel the myths surrounding type 2 diabetes and insulin treatment. The initiative, called Basado en Hechos (Based on Facts), will allow Don Francisco to travel the country and talk about his own experience living with type 2 diabetes. From burgers to carne asada, Latinos eat more beef or red meat than any other racial/ethnic group, according to the USDA. That isn't a good thing for health, research shows. Red meat and processed meat, like bacon and hot dogs, have been linked to certain types of cancer and cardiovascular disease—the two top causes of death for Latinos. Every Little Step Counts for Latino Child Health



Yolanda Konopken knows 1 in 10 people have diabetes in Arizona. Her program to help families manage diabetes has been at full capacity for years at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Phoenix (41.3% Latino population). Konopken wanted to do more to prevent unhealthy weight from causing diabetes in younger children. She had an idea to start a new, bilingual education program to provide support and counseling for families with children at risk of diabetes.
