Kids spend most of their day at school, eating most of their calories and expending most of their energy at school, so it is vital for the school environment to be healthy. New Bill in Washington Requires the Reporting of PE Quality in Schools

Physical activity is linked with academic achievement and improved mental and physical health. Sadly, many Latino majority schools do not provide recommended time for recess or quality PE, thus kids fall behind and are at higher risk for chronic disease. On April 20th, 2017, the Governor of Washington (12.4% Latino) signed a new bill (HB 1235) which assesses PE practices in public schools. Teachers in Betty Jane Elementary School in Akron, Ohio noticed kids were restless and not paying attention in class. Although testing is right around the corner, the school principal increased time for recess 15-20 minutes everyday. Schools play a huge role in helping kids reach their recommended daily physical activity, which boosts their mental and physical health, as well as their academic performance. Guam Gets Fit with Fit Fridays



On February third, the Ordot -Chalan Pago Elementary School (OCPES) kicked off the school-wide event for a SNAP-Ed program called "Fit Fridays" to encourage students to have at least one hour of regular physical activity every day. Health champions that helped lead the event were Principal of OCPES, Tricia Moylan and School Nurse, Leah Landstrom. Kindergarteners and First Graders Get Recess 4 Times a Day at Texas School



Eagle Mountain Elementary School, in Ft. Worth, TX (34.1% Latino), is tripling their time for recess, from 20 minutes to one hour, during the 2015-2016 school year as part of a project to model the Finnish school system. The project’s designer is Texas Christian University kinesiologist Debbie Rhea. She recognized that not only do Finnish students consistently score at or near the top in international education rankings, but that Finnish students also get more time for recess than American kids. Recess will be four times a day for 15-minutes.
