Active Texas 2020 is a comprehensive physical activity plan for the state of Texas.

It is divided into 8 sections which describe the need for establishing a statewide physical activity plan, how to go about collaborating with various stakeholders, how to obtain resources, and establish goals, for engaging in evidence based initiatives to promote physical activity.
Active Texas 2020 is built on the following principles:

  1. increasing physical activity will improve the health of individuals and throughout the state;
  2. making the healthier choice the easier choice in local communities where people live, work, pray and play is everyone’s business;
  3. a successful approach to making community change is one that:             a.) engages and seeks leadership, b.) collaboration, partnerships, relies on the scientific evidence base; and c.) consistently evaluates effectiveness.

Leadership and partnership played a key role in the development of the Active Texas 2020 plan to promote physical activity.

At the Fit City Summit in January 2009, local leaders from the Governor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness, the Austin’s Mayor’s Fitness Council, and members from the academic community decided that it was time to make physical activity a priority in Texas. The plan specifies that physical activity will be a health priority across the state when state policies, legislation, and funding are directed towards physical activity initiatives.
