In Midland, Texas (17.6 % Latino) Midland Memorial Hospital (MMH) is one of only two hospitals in the country to be part of a special partnership with the creator of Plant Pure Nation, a documentary about the health benefits of being on a pure plant based diet. Local School Wellness Policies in 2017, Here’s What You Need to Know

In July 2016, the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) finalized regulations that create guidelines for written wellness policies established by local educational agencies (LEAs). The final rule requires LEAs to develop revised local school wellness policies during School Year 2016-2017. Schools must be compliant with these requirements by June 30, 2017. To meet the minimum requirements set by the USDA's FNS, all schools participating in the National School Lunch program or School Breakfast program will have to ensure that they: Include goals for nutrition promotion and education, physical activity, and other school-based activities that promote students wellness. Denver Calls Out The Hidden Sugars With a New Health Campaign



Healthy Beverage Partnership (HBP), an initiative facilitated by Denver Public Health, has launched a new regional marketing campaign, Hidden Sugar. The HBP is a collaboration among six Denver metro local public health and environment agencies working to reduce sugary drink consumption through organizational policy adoption at community venues. The new campaign will run throughout January and February, and again in May. Denver Metro area residents should see the campaign ads on billboards, on TV, online or hear it on the radio. Mom Starts Petition for Healthier Checkout Lanes

Telling reporters and gaining attention from Good Morning America, Michigan mom, and healthy food advocate, Jane Kramer has started a petition towards healthier checkouts for retailers. The mom explained in her online petition, that stores should do more to combat the obesity epidemic, by providing shoppers with healthier foods at checkouts instead of encouraging impulse buys of junk food that are often sold with tabloids as well. Kramer is asking a specific retailer in Michigan, Meijer, that has over 220 stores across the state, to provide children's books along with healthier snack options at checkout lanes. Infant nutrition experts Norma Sifuentes and Diana Montano have promoted breastfeeding for 30 years combined in San Antonio, Texas (63.2% Latino). The two women, employees of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District’s Women, Infants and Children (SAMHD-WIC) department, know that breastfeeding duration rates are low here. Less breastfeeding means more risk of  obesity, diabetes, and lower IQs. What would you think of fruit slices or nuts in your grocery stores check out lanes? A recent study explored how consumers felt after a healthy in-store marketing study was conducted and how it can impact sales. Before the study was started, a pre-intervention study revealed many consumers had concerns and were annoyed with unhealthy snacks being placed and promoted throughout the store. Shoppers had reported a concern for many families that struggle with children pleading for unhealthy snacks at checkout, and believed stores should avoid unhealthy marketing.
