NYC’s Move-to-Improve Program Brings Physical Activity to the Classroom



According to New York State law, elementary schools are required to provide students with at least 120 minutes of PE every week. In order to help schools meet this requirement, the New York City Department of Education (DOE) and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) developed the Move-to-Improve classroom curriculum . Teachers who are interested in bringing Move-to-Improve (MTI) to their classroom can expect to receive: A 3-hour professional development workshop; An activity guide (for K-3 or 4-5th grade)  that integrates MTI concepts with Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) A music CD; and A stipend for participating. Laredo native Jennifer Garcia-Davalos grew up on the Texas-Mexico border, where the mostly Latino population suffers high rates of obesity, diabetes, and certain cancers. She has always wanted to help reduce those disparities. That’s why Garcia-Davalos, an aspiring physician and a master’s-degree student in public health at The UT School of Public Health, interned at the Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR) at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. Stephanie Hoban is a chef, registered dietitian, and owner of Ripe Cuisine, a healthy, locally sourced and seasonally-inspired food company in Houston, Texas. After a year selling delicious dishes like cornmeal crusted avocado tacos and roasted corn and tomato salad to customers at a farmers' market in Houston, Hoban wants to take her business to the streets. Pasadena School District Partners with Non-Profit to Bring More Physical Activity To the Classroom



Elementary schools from the Pasadena Unified School District have partnered with non-profit Catz SOLE to improve physical education and physical activity offerings at several elementary schools according to a Pasadena Now News article. Beginning in the Fall of 2014, schools will bring the new program to schools across the district. In order to get kids and parents excited about the new program Catz SOLE organized a Family Fun Field Day on June 8th, 2014. Shared Use Agreement to Bring New Sports Field to Latinos in Pasadena, CA



Latino children will soon have access to a new sports field thanks to a shared use agreement that was signed by the City of Pasadena (33.7% Latino) and the Pasadena Unified School District on Jun 18th, 2014. The new sports field, which will be open to the community during after school hours, is located at John Muir High School. According to a Pasadena Now news article, the city had originally planned to build a sports complex at Hahamongna Watershed Park, but instead requested state permission to use the $1.5 million grant towards improving the Muir Sports Field. The funds will be used towards soccer goals, bleachers, landscape improvements, water fountains, restroom facilities, and outdoor lighting for evening use.
