Healthy Latino Program For Apollo Middle School



The Canyon Ranch Institute (CRI) is a non-profit that works to bring health and wellness to the world. Home to Tucson, Arizona (30.3% Latino), the organization helps their community in various ways. Bringing a Healthy Community program pilot to the area back in 2014, the CRI Healthy Community program is now offered in partnership with Apollo Middle School and the Grow 2B Fit Foundation to bring wellness and health to the families in Apollo Middle School (98.1% Latino) . Yoga and regular gym workouts are both equally effective according to a new study, Ivanhoe reports. The study led by Dr. Daniel Hughes,an exercise researcher at the Institute for Health Promotion Research at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio (the team behind SaludToday), surprised all participants who expected one of the workouts to emerge as more effective. “I think I was expecting that one would be stronger than the other, and probably thinking that yoga would be the end all be all,” Michelle Hart, a study participant, told Ivanhoe. Schools Connect With Farms In PA



Farms, gardens, and schools are connecting in northeastern Pennsylvania. Working to incorporate more fresh vegetables and healthy food access to the area, schools are partnering with local farms and applying for Farm-to-School Grants. Lehigh Valley Chapter of Buy Fresh Buy Local (BFBFLGLV) works with schools and farmers to improve children's diets. Many free summer lunch programs were not able to offer more than a slice of tomato and lettuce for a sandwich. Knowing this, the organization started making connections with school administrators, farmers, and local activists. “If Iowa can do it, I believe that other states can as well,” said Teresa Wiemerslage in a recent article. Wiemerslage is the Program Coordinator with Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach. For over 7 years the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness initiative has helped local school systems focus on wellness, activity and local food. However, with new federal government nutritional requirements and funding from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at (ISU), the initiative has come up with a local menu for six school districts. Study: A Few Cups of Coffee a Day May Help Colon Cancer Patients Recover Better



Drinking a few cups of coffee a day can help colon cancer patients (the second most diagnosed cancer among Latinos) recover better and lower their chances of dying early according to a new study-- reports NBC News. For the study colon cancer patients reported in a daily diary their daily physical activity and their diet. "What we found in this slightly less than 1,000 patients is that those who drank coffee regularly had a better disease-free survival, meaning they had a lower rate of having their cancer recur or of dying," Dr. Charles Fuchs, director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston told NBC News. Learning Gardens Increase Test Scores By 15%



Growing gardens in schools shows impressive results, reports a recent NPR article. Students in Texas, Washington, Maryland and Virginia, are part of REAL School Gardens,  a non-profit that proves their efforts through REAL numbers of changes made through their efforts of planting learning gardens in schools. Many of the schools are in low-income areas, or urban areas considered "food deserts".  The organization reveals on their website that school who had "learning gardens" had increased test scores, and were more equipped in science and math.
