Health Disparities Lead to Higher Latino Infant Mortality



According to the Indiana Department of Health, seven out of every 1,000 infants born will not see their first birthday. The state is above the national average for infant deaths and it also has higher rates of pre-term births and prenatal smoking. Indiana is also lower than the national average among pregnant women who receive prenatal care in the first trimester of their pregnancy. LULAC Hosts Latinos Living Healthy Festival



In November, over 2,300 people attended the League of United Latin American Citizens’ (LULAC) Latinos Living Healthy: Feria de Salud in Brownsville, Texas. A variety of free health care services were offered to the festival’s attendees including diabetes screenings, blood pressure screenings, as well screenings for HIV and cholesterol. Attendees were also offered free flu shots, dental checkups, and mental health consultations. Children participated in numerous interactive events, including basketball drills, a hula hoop contest, and a healthy images art project. Local food vendors also provided free samples of local, fresh fruit to encourage healthier eating habits. Congresswoman Proposes Bill for Federal Soda Tax



A recent article reveals that sugary beverages are a hot topic in the news, especially when health issues like diabetes and health costs are at hand. Students at San Francisco Stat University (SF State) helped their president Les Wong change his view of big soda and hold off on buying into a partnership with Coke or Pepsi.
