San Antonio Latino Cancer Survivors, We Need You! Are you a Latino cancer survivor? Volunteer for the Avanzando Caminos study at UT Health San Antonio! Avanzando Caminos aims to enroll 1,500 Latino cancer survivors in South Texas to help unpack the social, cultural, behavioral, mental, biological, and medical influences on post-cancer life. The study, led by Dr. Amelie Ramirez of UT Health San Antonio and Mays Cancer Center, is looking for Latino survivors age 18 or older who have completed primary treatment for breast, colon, kidney, liver, lung, prostate, stomach or cervical cancer. Volunteers will participate in seven study visits over five years, each with assessment interviews, and some with blood draws. To volunteer for Avanzando Caminos or ask questions, contact Dr. Ramirez’s team at the Institute for Health Promotion Research at UT Health San Antonio at 210-562-6514 or caminos@uthscsa.edu. Share Participant Stories!

Amber Lopez. Amber is a San Antonio resident who began experiencing symptoms around age 14, was eventually diagnosed with cervical cancer a few years later at 18. Since her diagnosis, Lopez has overcome many challenges in her cancer journey. Now she’s sharing her story through the Avanzando Caminos study at the Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio to give hope to other Latino cancer survivors.

Angelina Vazquez Felsing. As a cancer survivor, Angelina Vazquez Felsing wants to help other Latinas who face cancer. Fortuitously, while visiting her oncologist, she saw a stand-up banner for the Avanzando Caminos study at the Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio. She decided to join and share her story.

Dr. Derek Rodriguez. From a young age, Dr. Derek Rodriguez had his heart set on attending medical school. Everything changed when he was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer at the tender age of 8. Rodriguez’s experience with cancer would eventually lead him to a research position at UT Health San Antonio’s Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR). Now he’s putting his dream into practice as a research scientist for the IHPR’s Avanzando Caminos study.
