Amtrak, a company that offers passenger railroad service in the US will soon be installing bike racks onto 55 baggage cars, according to a recent article in the Pittsburg Gazette Post.
According to the Gazette, in the fall of 2013, Amtrak tested the roll-on services during a one-day trial with bicyclists in Pittsburgh. The trial was a success and now Amtrak is testing the service in Chicago, New Orleans, Miami, and in the Northeast.
Linda Boxx, board member and former president of the Allegheny Trail Alliance told the Gazette: “It’s great to have Amtrak understanding how important the bike tourism industry is.”
According to the article, Boxx has worked for a number years to persuade Amtrak to improve its bicycle accommodations.
Riding a bike is a great way to stay active. It’s also a wonderful mode of transportation that almost anyone can participate in. According to The New Majority Pedaling Towards Equity Report, bicycling among Latinos increased in 2010. Between 2000 and 2010, Latino spending on bikes also grew by 43%.
