Stomach cancer accounts for about 1.5% of all new cancers diagnosed in the US each year, and Latinos have a high risk, according to the American Cancer Society.
With this in mind, it’s important for communities to learn about stomach cancer risk and have resources and tools to support themselves or loved ones experiencing this issue.
To raise awareness about stomach cancer, Debbie’s Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer will host the first-ever Gut Check for Stomach Cancer 5K Run & 1 Mile Walk from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025 at Greenline Park in San Antonio, Texas.

The event will include activities, such as health and wellness booths, local medical resources, a DJ and music, youth dance teams, face painting, and more.

The Gut Check for Stomach Cancer community event aims to amplify stomach cancer awareness and encourages South Texans to “listen to their gut” about symptoms, risk factors, and resources, according to the Debbie’s Dream Foundation.
Yolanda “Yoli” Barrera Day, a board member for Debbie’s Dream Foundation and a patient leader who shared her own stomach cancer journey as part of the Avanzando Caminos Latino Cancer Survivorship Study at UT Health San Antonio, spoke to KSAT-TV about stomach cancer and the new event.
Day urged people to find stomach cancer educational materials, support, and opportunities to speak up at the Debbie’s Dream Foundation website.
“Pay attention to your symptoms, pay attention to how you’re feeling, be [a local leader], and help support us by raising awareness,” Day told KSAT-TV.
Day is also a stomach cancer patient mentor and a member of the community advisory board of the Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio.
