Aramark and AHA Create 2020 Health Initiative for Americans



The American Heart Association (AHA) and Aramark have partnered up to encourage healthy living for Americans. The initiative is called Healthy for Life, 20 by 20, hoping to improve health of at least 20 percent of Americans by the year 2020. Aramark is changing their menus, along with their food's sodium and fat levels and increasing fruit and vegetable options for the 2 million foods they serve at various businesses, events, schools and parks. Latinos More Likely to Use Smartphones to Look for Health, Education, and Job Content



Latinos rely more on smartphones to access the Internet than whites, and are more likely to use their phones to look up health, education, and job content, according to a Pew Research Center report. Smartphones are narrowing the so-called digital divide between racial/ethnic minorities and whites. More Latinos (13%) and blacks (12%) are "smartphone-dependent," with no home Internet connection, than whites (4%), and there are key differences how these groups use their smartphones. According to the Pew report: Nearly three-quarters (73%) of Hispanic smartphone owners have used their phone in the past year to research a health condition, which is similar to the share for blacks. USDA Funds 17 Childhood Obesity Prevention Programs, Several of Them Will Target Latinos



The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded funds to 17 different universities and colleges working to develop and evaluate programs to prevent childhood obesity.  Of the programs that have been selected to receive funding, several will target Latino children, who continue to be a high risk demographic for becoming overweight or obese. Idaho Legislators Compete in Fitness Challenge to Prevent Childhood Obesity



Senators and representatives in Idaho, a state with a quickly growing Latino community,  are tracking their steps, water intake, and servings of fruits and vegetables as part of a month long, friendly competition aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and fighting childhood obesity. According to a Fox9 report 50 state legislators are taking part in a competition organized by health insurance provider Blue Cross of Idaho. ‘MEND’ Healthy Lifestyle Program to Soon Launch in Amarillo



Youth leaders from the Amarillo Activity Youth Center (AAYC) and the Amarillo Public Health Department are excited to announce the launch of a new healthy lifestyle program, available for free to kids ages 6-12. The 10 week Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, and Do it (MEND)  program will be available starting in March 2015. Grocery Chain H-E-B Brings Health Education & Fitness to Contestants in Texas and the Lower Rio Grande Valley



One of Texas' largest grocery store chains is providing the communities it serves with more opportunities to get excited about health and fitness. As part of this year's H-E-B's Slim Down Showdown 30 contestants, including 6 individuals from Texas' predominantly Latino Lower Rio Grande Valley, will participate in the 14-week challenge.
