sdsd-bloggers-225x121.jpgOne of Texas’ largest grocery store chains is providing the communities it serves with more opportunities to get excited about health and fitness. As part of this year’s H-E-B’s Slim Down Showdown 30 contestants, including 6 individuals from Texas’ predominantly Latino Lower Rio Grande Valley, will participate in the 14-week challenge.

Contestants will share their experiences via social media by using videologs and blogs. They’ll also have the opportunity to check in regularly with a registered dietitian.

According to the article, contestants in Brownsville and McAllen have already had the opportunity to walk through the grocery store and learn about what foods they should eat.

“We met with our dietitian so she could go over the different products that we have,” said Lettie Tellez, one of this year’s participants, in a Valley Morning Star news article.

Another participant, law enforcement officer Michael Plata, said that through the classes he’s learned about eating more fruits and vegetables and adding more color to your plate.

Contestants recently participated in a week long Fit Camp which was held in San Antonio, Texas between Jan. 17 – 23.

This year H-E-B is offering two challenges to the community including:

On May 9th winners of the showdown will be announced at the H-E-B Health & Wellness Expo.  Prior to revealing the grand prize winner, contestants will be given a makeover. Winners will be selected based on overall health improvement, participation and fan engagement. Health markers such as body mass index (BMI), blood glucose levels and cholesterol levels, will be used to measure fitness according to H-E-B spokesperson Linda Tovar.
