November is almost over, but its not too late to celebrate national diabetes awareness month!

Health care professionals organizations and communities across the nation are working toward bringing attention on how to manage and prevent diabetes.  The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease is raising awareness through the “Managing Diabetes – It’s Not Easy, But It’s Worth It” campaign. The program highlights how to prevent diabetes, managing and preventing complications form the disease.

According to the “Managing Diabetes- It’s Not Easy, But It’s Worth It” campaign, regularly getting at least 30 minutes of a moderate level of physical activity for at least five days a week reduces the risk of diabetes. Maintaining a healthy diet by reducing the amount of calories consumed per day, and avoiding foods and beverages that are high in sugar and fat is also recommend to reduce risk of diabetes. One way that you can make a change to prevent diabetes is by encouraging grocery stores to promote the marketing of healthy foods.

Latinos are 1.7 times more likely to get diabetes, and this disparity in diabetes prevalence corresponds very well to the gap in obesity prevalence and also the gap in diet quality in the Latino population. If un-managed diabetes can lead to amputation, heart attack, stroke, blindness and even death.

Take Action and celebrate National Diabetes Awareness month by showing your grocer the benefit of healthier marketing now. Sign our petition to tell grocers to mark the way to fruits and vegetables!
