In 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), published Cultural Insights: Communicating with Hispanics/Latinos to help you to communicate more effectively with specific cultures in order to influence their behavior.

For example, Latinos have lower mortality rates than the overall population, but are at greater risk for chronic diseases, thus getting diseases is often a bigger concern than dying.

The publication addresses:

  • Targeting Health Communication
  • Knowing your Audience
  • Media Habits (i.e. magazines, newspapers, radio, television, and internet)
  • Priority Health Concerns
  • Health-Care Seeking Behaviors
  • Traditional Health Beliefs and Practices
  • Cultural Elements (i.e. material culture, social institutions, belief systems, aesthetics, and language)
