Federal Initiative to Bring Healthier Foods to 27 Communities



Access to healthier foods is vital for Latino families who may be more at risk for health-related diseases. Local Foods, Local Places (LFLP), a federal initiative has planned to help increase access to healthier foods and help revitalize 27 communities through local food enterprises. The partner community works with experts to help community members access local opportunities for revitalizing downtowns and neighborhoods. A new bilingual ad campaign targets 86 million Americans with prediabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about 90% of people with prediabetes don’t know they have it and aren’t aware of the long-term risks to their health, including type 2 diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. Among Latinos, more than 16% have type 2 diabetes, compared to only 10.2% of non-Latino whites, according to the American Diabetes Association. Medical experts suggest that if current trends continue, 15-30% of Americans with prediabetes will develop diabetes within five years. New Study Shows Healthy Fats Reduce Heart Disease



According to the Journal of the American Heart Association (AHA), consuming healthy fats like polyunsaturated fats can help reduce bad cholesterol levels in the blood, associated with lower risk of heart disease and stroke. Examples of healthy fats include foods like soybeans, avocado, corn, tofu, nuts, seeds, fatty fish, and sunflower oils. Unhealthy fats, such as trans fats, are usually found in processed foods, like baked and fried foods and found from street food vendors in countries like India. Deaths resulting from excess consumption of these unhealthy trans fats represented 7.7 percent of global heart disease deaths. UPDATE: Alabama’s Healthy Food Financing Act



Alabama Legislature passed the Healthy Food Financing Act in May 2015, that revolutionized and expanded incentives to renovate grocery stores and fresh food retailers to offer more healthy fresh food options. Not only would the Bill provide more access to fresh foods, but also create opportunities to help increase local jobs, explained Sen. Greg Reed in a recent article.  The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) will administer the funds and announced on January 21st, 2016 to commit to set aside new funds towards the implementation of the program. My Daughter’s Kitchen After-School Cooking Classes



In 2012, My Daughter's Kitchen started by Maureen Fitzgerald began cooking classes to help students discover how to make meals from scratch. After partnering with the Vetri Community Partnership, the program began to expand to an after-school cooking program and the program has expanded to schools across the years. Making fresh foods on a low budget, students learn how to cook and prepare fresh tasty dishes for eight weeks in the fall and spring classes. They are able to make the meals from start to finish and then taste test the dishes in a family-style setting. Now more than eighteen schools across Philadelphia are enjoying the after-school classes. ALDI Grocery Chains Announce Healthier Checkout Lanes



ALDI has pledged to become the first United States supermarket chain to remove junk food from all checkout areas. On January 12, 2016, the discount retail grocer announced that all checkout lanes will offer healthier items reduced in calories, fat, sugars and sodium. The checkout lanes across ALDI's 1,500 locations are to be stocked by the end of 2016 with items like single serve nuts, trail mixes, dried fruits and various low sugar granola bars. Dr. Leana Wen, Baltimore City Health Commissioner stated in a recent video, "The number one killer of both men and women, in the U.S and right here in Baltimore City is heart disease." Wen explained that childhood obesity is an epidemic in the nation and in their city, and a large contributor of this problem is children's daily consumption of sugary-sweetened beverages.
