Changing Kids Pre-Set Menus



Many restaurants offer the same sugary beverages on kids meals with unhealthy options like high-sugar sodas, lemonades and juices. Now Maryland lawmakers are considering a bill to help ban soda's and other sugary drinks from kids menu's in all restaurants. Wanting to help parents and kids make the healthy choice the easy choice, the bill would change kids menus to offer healthier choices like water, low-fat milk or 100 percent juices at regular price. "The choice that comes with 80 percent of restaurant kids' meals is a soda or a fruit punch, and in those cases families are always welcomed to ask for a healthy drink, but it sometimes costs $2 or $3 more to get a milk," Robi Rawl, the Sugar Free Kids Maryland Executive Director said in a recent article. Drowning Prevention Advocates Teach Water Safety to Kids Under 5



In the past 15 years, the drowning rate of school-age children in Broward County, Fla., has plummeted thanks in part to SWIM Central, a program that provides free water safety education classes and transportation for public school children. However, drowning rates remain the No. 1 cause of death among children younger than 5. Local health and community leaders are encouraging people to drink more water through a new health campaign called, Live Sugar Freed. This new campaign is a pilot project of "A Healthy America"- a national movement to help prevent health problems by using the power of media for prevention. More countries are taking notice of the health risks associated with consumption of sugary drinks and are taxing sugary beverages, currently Chile, France, Hungary and Mexico have taxes on sugary drinks. Pediatrician Dr. Alejandro Clavier is working on reversing diabetes and childhood obesity for his Latino patients at Saint Anthony Hospital in Chicago. Sugar Out Day in Lincoln County



To help bring awareness to the impacts that sugar can have on health risks such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity, a group of organizations is challenging Lincoln County residents to cut sugar out of their daily diets. Colorado School Gets New Salad Bar



With funds received on January 6th from the Colorado Health Foundation, kids at Akron School will have a variety of fresh vegetables to choose for lunch with their new salad bar. The new salad bar offers students cucumbers, pea salad, garbanzo beans, dressings, apples, sliced carrots, and more. Washington County Connections' Healthy Schools Advocate, Holly Thompson, helped obtain the grant for the new salad bar. Meghan Camacho, the Director of the food program for the school has worked with Sarah Kvichackof the LiveWell Colorado School Food Initiative also to help bring healthier meals to students over the last two years.
