The state of Minnesota is piloting a program during summer 2013 that they hope will encourage positive eating changes for low-income families.

Started in June, food stamp (known as SNAP) recipients will be getting an exciting incentive to add more fruits and vegetables to their diets. Customers at select grocery stores in Minnesota who receive SNAP benefits will get a $5 coupon to be used specifically for fruits and vegetables. If the state sees an increase of fruits and vegetables bought with SNAP, they hope to implement the program on a larger scale. The pilot program is a partnership between the Minnesota Department of Human Services, the Minnesota Grocers Association, and Minnesota Grown, which promotes locally-grown food.
