PE Teachers Bring 60 Minutes of Daily Activity to Students Before or After School



Many Latino students don’t meet daily recommendations of physical activity because they lack access to quality activity opportunities during school and they are burdened by barriers to access quality activity opportunities after school, such as safety, availability and cost. Kids that don’t meet daily recommendations of physical activity are at increased risk for obesity and other adverse health outcomes. Two PE teachers in Edmonds School District in Washington developed a before/after school program as well as a recess program to help kids reach 60 minutes of recommended daily activity on most days of the week. Poll: Latinos Adults Increasingly Concerned with Childhood Obesity, Abuse, Sexting



Latino, black, and white adults all list childhood obesity and bullying as two of the top-three child health issues, but Latinos rank child abuse and neglect higher, according to the annual National Poll on Children’s Health by the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Overall, adults grew increasingly concerned about Internet safety (the 4th-biggest issue, up from 8th last year) and sexting (up to 6th from 13th). Innovative Health Education for Kids, by Kids in Schools



In a Florida school district that didn’t provide health classes in high schools, a health educator, Risa Berrin, and her sister, Valerie Berrin, worked together to raise the bar on health education with their Health Information Project (HIP). HIP is a peer-to-peer program that allows students to teach each other about health problems, prevention, and how to access to local health resources toward reducing obesity, suicide, depression and other issues. Georgia SHAPE Partners With Playworks To Improve Recess



Georgia Shape, a statewide initiative which seeks to bring an additional 30 minutes of physical activity to every elementary school in Georgia has partnered with the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation and Playworks, an organization that works to improve the quality of recess by creating a bully-free zone. Through the partnership, Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald, commissioner Georgia Department of Public Health, said in a Crossroads news article, that the aim would be to  make recess safer by providing support and training to staff for delivering the Playworks curriculum to at least 35,000 students at elementary schools across the state. National Non-profit Urges Families to Examine the State of Recess At Schools



Physical activity and recess are both important to a child's development and growth, but many times students aren't provided with enough recess time at school. This is especially true for Latino students. According to a Salud America! research brief, schools with predominantly Latino students were were less likely to receive at least 20 minutes of recess compared to schools with primarily White students. Poll: Hispanic Adults Rate Childhood Obesity as Top Health Concern for Kids



More Hispanic adults (47%) than white adults (39%) rate childhood obesity as the leading health concern for children in their communities, according to the latest annual poll by the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health. Overall, childhood obesity is the leading concern of all parents. However, the poll reflects markedly varied perspectives about child health concerns by race/ethnicity: Hispanic adults are more likely than black or white adults to express concerns about bullying and alcohol abuse. Black adults express greater concerns about teen pregnancy. Hispanics didn't rate teen pregnancy in their Top-10 concerns. Poll: Hispanics Cite Obesity, Lack of Exercise as Biggest Health Problems for Kids



U.S. adults rate "not enough exercise" at the top of the list of top health problems for children in their communities, according to the sixth annual survey of top health concerns conducted by the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health. Other top overall health concerns include childhood obesity, smoking, drug abuse and bullying. Hispanic adults were more likely to rate childhood obesity first, followed by "not enough exercise." Hispanics also rated drug abuse higher than smoking and tobacco use.
