San Antonio Groups Get $250K to Promote Healthy Lifestyles

Family CyclingFive community organizations in San Antonio received a combined $250,000 in grants form Medtronic, Inc., to promote healthy lifestyles and improve access to health care.

Check out the great activities enabled by the grants:

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of South Texas will educate the broader and under-served community about type 1 diabetes, provide resources to improve their access to care, and expand support groups.

YMCA of Greater San Antonio will extend their outreach health and wellness programs, specifically to those communities with a higher prevalence of diabetes, to promote and educate on physical activity and healthy eating.

The American Diabetes Association of San Antonio will coordinate and implement the Hispanic outreach education program, Por Tu Familia, to educate the Hispanic community about preventing and managing diabetes, and provide them with resources for improved access to diabetes care.

San Antonio Sports will expand i play! afterschool, an afterschool program with sports training, nutrition education, and character building, from 30 to 45 elementary schools in San Antonio.

San Antonio Social and Health Research Center will incorporate parents into their Bienestar/NEEMA preschool health program, providing physical, health, and nutrition education to promote healthy lifestyles for families and children ages 3 and 4 within the Eastside Promise Neighborhood.

“Medtronic is dedicated to providing greater freedom and better health for people with diabetes, and through these grants, we are able to give back and strengthen the relationships our employees have built in the San Antonio community where they live and give,” said Jeff Ruiz, senior director, customer service and general manager of the San Antonio facility of Medtronic.
