Latinos are disproportionately burdened by unsafe transportation environments. In order to reduce Latino childhood obesity and prevent pedestrian injuries, families, schools and communities need to work together. Here are 8 steps to create a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program.
It may be useful to first understand the processes and people involved in SRTS. The Safe Routes to School National Partnership has developed a toolkit of action briefs, Powerpoint slides and webinars to understand the processes and people involved in SRTS, which include:
- Municipal transportation departments
- Principals and school boards
- School district transportation departments
- Local elected officials
- Governors and state agency leaders
- New Funding
