As summer approaches, farmers’ markets begin kicking into high gear.

Phat Beats Produce, a group of passionate food activists in Oakland, CA, are working to upgrade their Saturday farmers’ market to have it serve more low-income families, farmers of color (many of which are Latino), and the whole North Oakland neighborhood.new-sat-market-poster-final1

Since 2010, the Saturday market has been a forum for small farmers of color to connect with urban dwellers, while keeping the prices of their organically-grown produce affordable and accessible.  It is a space that hosts grassroots economic initiatives that assist low-income residents such as the Phat Beets Kitchen Incubator Program and the Phat Beetz Youth Pickle Company.  Through free Food n’ Justice Workshops, monthly crop swaps and free bread offerings, Phat Beats creates a place that invites the community to gather, connect and mingle.

Partnering with Destiny Arts Center, the market will be relocating with the Grand Opening date of Saturday June 14th from 9:30-2:30.

What does Phat Beats envision for the new market?

  • An amazing selection of affordable, organic and pesticide-free vegetables and fruits
  • Double EBT/SNAP Benefits
  • Delicious food offerings from the Phat Beets Kitchen Incubator Program
  • Informative, fun and radical educational programs
  • Bouncy house for the kids
  • A chance to meet your neighbors

Phat Beats is still in the process of raising necessary funds for the market upgrade, which includes a $1,000 permit from the City to close the street during market operations. If you want to donate to the new market, click here.
