Calling all aspiring young public health leaders in The Alamo City!
UT Health San Antonio is giving teens in the 11th and 12th grades the chance to expand their horizons and learn what it truly means to devote yourself to the public health field by hosting a free summer camp.
Since 2011, the camp, which is free to attend and runs from June 23-27, 2025, in San Antonio, seeks to open the world of public health to students interested in careers like epidemiology, nutrition, researcher, and occupational health and safety.
“The goal of the camp is to increase the future public health and biomedical workforce capacity by building student awareness and knowledge of population health-related professions,” according to the camp announcement.
About the Public Health Camp
For a week, teens will dive into the 10 Essential Public Health Services, which make up public health’s core functions; assessment, development, and assurance.
Campers will be exposed to some of these aspects through field trips around San Antonio, giving teens an inside look at the San Antonio public health system at work.
Previous field trips have included visits to Steven M. Clouse Water Recycling Center, Fort Sam Houston, and the Witte Museum.
Attendees will also endeavor to learn more about research, data collection, and dissemination and participate in interactive workshops — all while engaging with teens with similar interests.
At the end of the five-day camp, participants will complete a capstone project, which may lead to the presentation of a final group project at UT Health San Antonio’s IIMS Community Engagement Symposium.
How to Apply
To be eligible to apply, students must not have attended the camp before, be rising 11th and 12th grade students for the 2025-2026 academic year from Bexar County schools, which includes private, charter, and home schools, and have reliable transportation.
Applications are available online and are due by Friday, May 2, 2025.
As per the application, students should be prepared to describe what public health means and how it applies to your life, family, or community. You will also be required to write a short paragraph explaining why you want to attend.
Spaces are limited, and students’ acceptance depends on a virtual introduction meeting and application. If you’re selected, you’ll receive an invitation to enroll by May 12, 2025.
The camp is collaboratively led by UTHealth School of Public Health, UT Health San Antonio – Institute for Integration of Medicine & Science (IIMS), and the South Central Area Health Education Center (AHEC).
There is no cost to attend. Lunch and snacks will be provided.
Camp will commence on Monday, June 23, 2025, and run through Friday, June 27, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Neighborhood Place, 3014 Rivas St, San Antonio, TX 78228.
