Because safe places to bike and walk don’t build themselves, the Alliance for Biking & Walking creates and strengthens bicycling and walking advocacy groups across the country. They understand the importance of partnerships and provide, tools, resources, and training to help advocates win campaigns.
At their 2015 National Training — Organizing, Leadership and Digital Strategies for a Stronger Movement, Alliance for Biking & Walking explored the topic of building better community partnerships.
They discussed four levels of community partnerships-from object, to recipient, to partner, to leader-and came up with 10 strategies to move communities up the ladder from objects to leaders.
- Start at the top.
- Establish clear goals for partnership.
- Be selective.
- Set clear roles and responsibilities.
- Ensure shared decidsion-making power.
- Provide training.
- Be aware of different communication styels.
- Value participation.
- Include room for growth.
- Actively address life circumstances.
