Genoveva Islas-Hooker understands the barriers that Latinos face in accessing adequate healthcare. She has had to endure several hardships in life, including the loss of close relatives and loved ones–due to illness. Having been the first in her family to earn her master’s degree she now trains Valley residents, and teaches them to advocate for a healthy community as part of the Powerful People course. Latinos who graduate from the Powerful people program are now becoming active change agents for their communities.
