Open Enrollment for health insurance as part of the Affordable Care Act through a 2106 Marketplace plan is over. However, for those who qualify for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), you can get health insurance any time of year, with coverage starting immediately.

Medicaid provides health coverage for many low-income families and children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Many states have expanded their Medicaid programs to cover all people below particular income levels. CHIP provides the same type of low-cost health coverage to children in families that are above the pay threshold for Medicaid. In some states, CHIP is provided to pregnant women, as well.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), 95% of eligible uninsured Latinos might qualify for Medicaid, CHIP, or programs to help lower the cost of health insurance coverage in the Marketplace. To determine if someone is eligible for coverage, HHS has set up a screener website. By answering a few questions, you can be immediately informed of your eligibility.

In 2014, an estimated 8 in 10 uninsured Latinos qualified for Medicaid or CHIP. If you already know you qualify, there are two options to apply for Medicaid and/or CHIP. The first is completing health insurance application at HealthCare.gov. You can also apply directly to your state’s Medicaid agency.
