Walking is known for it’s healthy benefits. The American Heart Association has stated that walking helps reduce cancer and disease while increasing mental health and helping prevent obesity.

Latino students need more activity in their day to help prevent cardiovascular disease and obesity. Allowing students to walk while learning is a healthy alternative to the average school day of sitting 90 percent of the time.

A teacher from North Carolina (NC), Laura Fenn, was tired from a rough day at school. Wanting more for her students and herself, she put on her sneakers and put on a podcast then headed out for a walk after school. Realizing the health benefits she was getting, while at the same time listening and learning to one of her favorite podcasts, she decided to write a grant the next day.

The grant was written for her class to learn while walking, she calls it The Walking Classroom. Students listen to a podcast and walk, getting exercise and learning all at the same time.

Schools in NC are using the program and students and teachers are enjoying the time getting up and outside.

Helping provide students with a fun way to walk off stress and still succeed on a test, The Walking Classroom can be used for any school or afterschool program.
