Apply now for the 2017 Éxito! Latino Cancer Research Leadership Training program and optional $3,250 internships at the Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR) at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Éxito! (English: Success!) recruits trainees annually for a culturally tailored curriculum to promote pursuit of a doctoral degree and cancer research career.

This year, program leaders will select 25 master’s level students and professionals from across the country to take part in a five-day summer institute June 5-9, 2017, in San Antonio to provide resources needed to take the next step in their education and apply for doctoral programs. The summer institute also brings Latino researchers and mentors to teach participants about cancer prevention, research, and career options.

Ten optional internships also are available to program participants.

Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. CST, Monday, March 6, 2017.

“We want participants to go on to earn doctorates and conduct novel research on why Latinos suffer worse outcomes from certain cancers,” said Dr. Amelie G. Ramirez, director of Éxito!, which is funded by the National Cancer Institute, and based at the UT Health Science Center.

Latinos earn just 3.9% of all science and engineering doctoral degrees conferred, according to a recent report by the National Science Foundation.

Éxito! aims to increase that number. Of 126 Éxito! graduates since 2010, more than 25% have applied to doctoral programs and more than 20% are currently enrolled in a doctoral program.

Past trainees say the program motivated and supported their pursuit of a doctorate.

“I had no one to talk with about the application process. Being a first-generation college graduate and master’s level graduate, I can’t get insight/guidance from family,” said Laura Rubalcava of San Antonio, a 2011 Éxito! graduate. “It’s been inspiring to see people just like me overcome barriers and become successful in their fields.”

Applicants must: be a master’s-level health program student or master’s-trained health professional; have good academic standing; have strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills; and not be current or accepted doctoral program students.
