Joseph Nickol wants to know, “What is your neighborhood known for?”

He advises readers to analyze their neighborhoods and figure out what needs a little fix up for green space for kids, crumbling streets for safe walking routes or new events to revitalize the community.

Believing that huge investments can happen in as little as a weekend, Kevin Wright, a senior associate at a landscape and urban design firm, and Joe Nickol, ask people to prove them right by organizing events in underutilized areas of their neighborhoods. Not only are Wright and Nicol asking people to take action, they want to help people take action.

How?

By sharing their web-based guide to help activate neighborhoods.

Guiding neighbors to connect and move communities to make healthy changes together the guide breaks down 5 steps to rejuvenate neighborhoods.

1) Diagnosis– walk around the neighborhood with your neighbors to find the areas that need attention, figure out the “why” of the changes you want to make

2) Space– Take note of where there are areas of discussion, especially small spaces that just need a little recharge

3) Partners– when the walk is done keep everyone together and invite them to dinner to plan an activation day, and figure out attainable resources to reactivate the spots identified

4) Broadcast-invite friends and family to the clean up or project, remember to start small and then encourage those that come to get the word out through social media, give the space a name or a hashtag

5) Evaluate and repeat– Realize what work and what was missing, repeat the good stuff.
