All kids deserve to grow up in a healthy environment, where access and education around healthy meals and activities bring about healthy habits for a lifetime.

Hoping to ensure girls learn about aspects of wellness like friendship health and community, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (BCBSAZ) is working with Girl Scouts-Arizona Cactus- Pine Council (GSACPC) to encourage girls to earn a new badge focused on healthy living.

The “All About Healthy Living” patch will be launched in February 2017 and is focused on wellness, including aspects like friendship, community, fitness and health.

Healthy eating is also part of the partnership where BCBSAZ is requesting all young girl aspiring chefs to join the All About Healthy Living recipe contest, where they can submit an original healthy cold side dish recipe.

The recipe must include a fruit and or vegetable and contest winners will be judged on nutritional value, taste, the cost for ingredients and originality. Girls who win the entry will receive $150 gift card and the dish will be distributed at community events. The contest entry requires all to enter by October 8th, 2016 at Nourishingarizona.com/recipe.

Having healthy food contests, and encouraging young girls to get involved in healthy habits is a great way to promote wellness in social settings. In Arizona (30.7% Latino) where the Latino population is the fastest-growing minority, reports Tuscon Weekly, having opportunities to increase health education and access is important for Latino kids who often are at higher risks for diabetes and heart disease.
