Navigating a family member’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis is difficult.
But what about some of our younger and more vulnerable family members who may lack the resources needed to open up and talk about the disease?
Otskuka, a pharmaceutical company focused on advancing patient care, is following up ion the narrative of its original video with an interactive video series geared toward helping children adjust and recognize the changes in their loved ones.
Let’s dig into the interactive video and how families can use it to engage their youngest family members.
Interactive Alzheimer’s Video
The interactive video experience Time With Josh introduces viewers to Josh, a boy who has a special relationship with his grandma, who is showing signs of memory loss.
The videos catalogue different areas of Josh’s life and how they are impacted by his grandmother’s life changes, which include memory loss and behavioral changes related to Alzheimer’s disease.
Each segment is followed by a series of discussion questions for children to engage in with their caretakers.
They range from opening up a dialogue about questions related to the disease and questions about the content of the video.
Questions are meant to open conversation, spark follow-up questions, and gain an understanding of how a loved one’s diagnosis may affect children’s feelings and emotions.
The tool can be used for processing the diagnosis as a family or individually for the child.
Time With Josh is the follow up to the video Where The Ocean Meets The Shore., which equates his grandmother’s struggle with Alzheimer’s to creatures in the ocean they both love.
“Navigating the complexities of Alzheimer’s disease and explaining those complexities to children can be a daunting task for caregivers. As the number of individuals diagnosed with this condition rises, the need for effective communication becomes even more important,” according to the video description.
Alzheimer’s Activity Book
The interactive video works in conjunction with a companion activity e-book.
The multipage booklet includes activities and crafts designed to help children understand the challenges of a loved one’s diagnosis.
The material expands on the discussion topics in the interactive video and explores the struggles of navigating life with a loved one with Alzheimer’s.
E-book activities include building an emotional spinner so that kids can express their emotions in a positive way and have companion questions that accompany it, memory storyboard, and tiny printable theater.
The colorful PDF can be downloaded and used offline.
Volunteer for an Alzheimer’s Clinical Trial!
Alzheimer’s is a disease that affects your entire familia, including our abuelos, moms, and dads.
Clinical trials can help us fight for our familia.
Clinical trials are studies that help researchers learn more to help slow, manage, and treat Alzheimer’s and cancer for current and future family members. But without volunteers for clinical trials, the benefits may miss this group.
Visit our clinical trials page to find a clinical trial, read about hero volunteers, and more!
“Volunteers in clinical trials are not only helping themselves, but they’re also building a future with better treatments that can help their families in the future,” said Dr. Amelie Ramirez, director of Salud America! and the Institute for Health Promotion Research at UT Health San Antonio.
Those looking for opportunities based in San Antonio can search the Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio’s Find a Clinical Trial database to learn more about available clinical trials and eligibility requirements.
On a national level, visit clinicaltrials.gov to find a clinical trial near you.
