Healthy Latin Eating suggests soda alternatives for kids, offering low sugar substitutes to help combat obesity.

  1. Fruit Fizzies- a combination of carbonated water and 100% pure juice. To make combine 1/3 pure juice and 2/3 plain carbonated water, feel free to use natural fruit like fresh berries, mangoes, strawberries or pineapple to give a naturally sweet flavor.
  2. Fruit Tea Coolers-use flavored fruit teas like peach, strawberry or black berry and add mint if you like, cool it and serve with ice.
  3. Apple/Cucumber Water- add sliced apples or cucumbers to a pitcher of water and let it sit and cool in the refrigerator for 20 mins. Serve with a sprig of mint for extra coolness.
  4. Water Kefir- a probiotic option that is easy to make, just take 3 1/2 cups of water kefir, 1/2 apple diced or 1/4 cup of 100% apple juice and a teaspoon sugar. Remove kefir grains and pour kefir water into an airtight bottle. Shake carefully to mix the ingredients.
  5. Low-fat milk or water

Studies show that Latino kids are marketed to more than their white peers, and that they consume more sugary beverages than their white peers. According to  article from a Yale Study, teens are marketed to through TV ads and radio more than adults, and they saw more ads for energy drinks in 2010 than in 2008.

Having healthier options at home such as these soda alternatives may help Latino kids see the healthier choice as the easier choice.
