State Awards $75 million to Help Meet Public Demand for Transportation Equity

The Texas Transportation Commission recently awarded more than $75 million in funds (state and federal) to transit providers that provide services to the state’s veterans, seniors, people with disabilities, and those who need assistance getting to work, school, healthcare facilities, and other important destinations.

“Independence and quality of life for our state’s public transit users will be enhanced through this funding,” said Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Executive Director James Bass. “We are grateful for the collaboration with our partners around the state who ultimately are helping us provide meaningful transportation solutions for Texans.”

Latinos currently make up 38.4% of the total population of Texas. The transit agencies supported by these new mobility funds reported more than 34 million trips in 2014. In addition to helping Texas transit users get to work, school, medical facilities, etc., the funds will help people get to community centers and programs.

Historically, public transportation systems functioned largely as a “safety net” for individuals with no other means of getting from place to place. A review of U.S. Census Bureau survey estimates shows the large demographic divide in public transportation commuters. Those individuals that utilize these services are disproportionately poorer in nearly every major city with a significant number of riders.

On a national level, commuters driving alone to work report median earnings $4,314 higher than those taking public transportation. By providing park-and-ride commuter services, vanpools, and other options for those who choose to commute via public transportation, the funds also help address congestion relief in rapidly growing areas.

In 2016, TxDOT has administered state and federal public transportation grant programs exceeding $130 million. Many of these awards also include transportation development credits that support eligible capital project investments, including vehicles, facilities, equipment and preventive maintenance.
