Telling reporters and gaining attention from Good Morning America, Michigan mom, and healthy food advocate, Jane Kramer has started a petition towards healthier checkouts for retailers.

The mom explained in her online petition, that stores should do more to combat the obesity epidemic, by providing shoppers with healthier foods at checkouts instead of encouraging impulse buys of junk food that are often sold with tabloids as well.

Kramer is asking a specific retailer in Michigan, Meijer, that has over 220 stores across the state, to provide children’s books along with healthier snack options at checkout lanes.

More than 1,195 supporters have signed her petition to help create healthier checkout aisles where kids are often faced with soda, candy, and chips. As Kramers hopes, kids would instead see at eye level, kids books, healthy beverages, and kid-friendly healthy snacks like fruits and veggies.

Meijer stores are not only located in Michigan but are also present in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin, where their core values are stated to include “offering products and services to help our customers lead healthier lives.”

However, according to local news Michigan live, they have not responded to her petition and have released a statement that explains that they have a broad and diverse customer base, and they are providing for all of their customer’s needs.

Unfortunately, many purchases at checkouts are impulse buys, according to CSPI’s report, where the group has their own petition asking Walgreens to reduce soda and candy in the checkout areas.

Healthier foods won’t deter sales for stores, according to research, in fact, it may help stores sell more healthy foods and allow stores to help families see the healthy options as the easy choice.

Many retailers are taking note, like Target, Aldi and more, and USDA has a helpful guide to help store owners, supermarkets, and corner stores see the benefits of healthier marketing and foods in all areas of their stores.
