Fuel Up To Play 60 teaches kids football moves, and interactive games helping kids move more in school and eat healthier.

A launch to help promote the program recently took place Wednesday, March 17th at Redskins Park where student participated in an “Iron Chef” style competition to create the best smoothie.

Students from three elementary schools who had pre-submitted their recipes worked at preparing a healthy dairy-based smoothie for judges and special Redskin football players to try.

Judges enjoyed a ‘Berry Banana Blitz’ that had low-fat greek yogurt, a ‘Sunshine Burst’, which had fresh fruit and flax seeds, and a ‘Laney Loo Loo’ smoothie, that included chia seeds into the fresh fruit mix.

Winner of the competition was Loudoun County Public Schools, receiving $40,000 from the Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association, to help the school promote healthy lifestyle choices. Hosting the competition was a partnership between the Charitable Foundation and the Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association.

The physical education teacher of Loudoun County Schools, Hugh Brockway mentioned in a recent article, that the plans for the grant money have been already talked about with students, and they plan to implement students ideas in ways to keep kids active in the classroom.

Some ideas that students had were to have things painted on the recess blacktop for more fun areas to play, and other ideas included yoga ball chairs and stand up desks.

Brockway said that he really hopes to keep kids active, but in a way that doesn’t disturb classroom time, and he believes that the grant money will make a real positive impact in their schools and at recess.
