A new campaign from the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles is working to help the communities of Santa Monica, CA (14.1 % Latino) increase consumption of water and learn why it’s important to drink water instead of sugary beverages.

The campaign, called “Water: The Healthiest Choice” is hoping to help parents’ increase their knowledge of the health benefits of drinking water instead of sugary beverages, especially for their children’s health.

Research has shown that sugary beverages, when consumed daily, increase the risk of diet-related disease in kids and adults. Latino kids often consume many sugary beverages, and with each sugary drink consumed the risk of becoming an obese adult jumps to sixty percent.

The campaign suggests some ways to help parents to help kids drink more water and less sugary beverages.

  1. Pour a glass of water in the morning and with each meal, making it a routine to have water with every meal.
  2. Give kids a fun reusable water bottle, cups with fun straws are appealing too!
  3. Add your child’s favorite fruit to the water, to let kids see and taste and eat their favorite fruits too!
  4. If it is a challenge to have kids completely stop drinking sugary beverages, do a “1 for 1”, have them drink a glass of water first before having a sugary beverages.

The efforts of the campaign don’t stop with awareness, as a recent article also mentions that they are working on addressing early childhood obesity by focusing on the unhealthy food and beverage advertising in the community.
