Growing Healthier Schools



UrbiCulture Community Farms are making school lunches look a little more like a garden with their new school garden programs. Teachers plant alongside students, helping them understand what it takes to grow food, and be more open to eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Students harvest the fresh produce from the 6,500 square-foot garden to bring to the cafeteria for all students to try and enjoy. Linda Joseph, a special needs teacher in Florida, with some of the highest drowning rates in the country, wanted to make sure her students could swim and weren’t afraid of the water. As someone who values whole-child health, Joseph knows that water safety boosts confidence and opens doors to many water-based physical activities and associated mental and physical benefits. Drowning Prevention Advocates Teach Water Safety to Kids Under 5



In the past 15 years, the drowning rate of school-age children in Broward County, Fla., has plummeted thanks in part to SWIM Central, a program that provides free water safety education classes and transportation for public school children. However, drowning rates remain the No. 1 cause of death among children younger than 5. This new campaign is a pilot project of "A Healthy America"- a national movement to help prevent health problems by using the power of media for prevention. More countries are taking notice of the health risks associated with consumption of sugary drinks and are taxing sugary beverages, currently Chile, France, Hungary and Mexico have taxes on sugary drinks. Pediatrician Dr. Alejandro Clavier is working on reversing diabetes and childhood obesity for his Latino patients at Saint Anthony Hospital in Chicago. Sugar Out Day in Lincoln County



To help bring awareness to the impacts that sugar can have on health risks such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity, a group of organizations is challenging Lincoln County residents to cut sugar out of their daily diets. Colorado School Gets New Salad Bar



With funds received on January 6th from the Colorado Health Foundation, kids at Akron School will have a variety of fresh vegetables to choose for lunch with their new salad bar. The new salad bar offers students cucumbers, pea salad, garbanzo beans, dressings, apples, sliced carrots, and more. Washington County Connections' Healthy Schools Advocate, Holly Thompson, helped obtain the grant for the new salad bar.
