August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, a time that highlights the importance of protecting children’s vision.
With this in mind, Salud America! has put together a list of helpful tools and resources for parents and families to learn more about children’s eye health and vision.
1. Prevent Blindness
Through Prevent Blindness, the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health is a place where parents and caregivers can find a multitude of support.
Health education resources, including vision and eye health presentations and webinars and children’s vision fact sheets, posters, reports, and publications.
There are also plenty of resources for parents and caregivers with children who have vision problems or impairment.
In collaboration with the National Head Start Association, The National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness created Small Steps for Big Vision: An Eye Health Information Tool Kit for Parents and Caregivers.
This tool provides parents and caregivers with guides on information, suggested actions, and help to be empowered partners in their children’s vision and eye health.
The toolkit is available in English and Spanish.
Prevent Blindness also provides a Children’s Vision Screening Certification Course for people like school nurses, early head start/head start staff, community volunteers, physician assistants and others who work and care for children.

2. National Eye Institute
The National Eye Institute (NEI) provides many resources for children to understand and learn more about
eye health.
Resources like first aid tips, sports and eye protection, healthy vision tips, and more are made accessible for children.
The NEI also has fun resources for kids like printable activity books, interactive activities, and educational videos on different vision topics.

3. American Academy of Ophthalmology
The American Academy of Ophthalmology also has information on children’s eye health and safety.
A list of 20 things to know about children’s eye health and vision is available for parents, which includes information and resources on babies, toddlers, school-aged children, teens, and young adults.
Parents and caregivers can also access home vision tests for children and more information about eye injury prevention and care.
Additional information on vision development in childhood and how screen use can impact health and vision is available.
Recognizing the signs of eye problems in children can be challenging, but the American Academy of Ophthalmology has a guide to help parents and guardians know and understand common eye problems in children.
